Back Horace Greeley House - Chappaqua, NY

When the Chappaqua Historical Society decided to purchase the Horace Greeley House to restore and use as its new headquarters, it was a far cry from its original condition. The restoration architects and historians retained to design and program the project developed specifications which would return the house as it would have been when Horace Greeley and his family occupied the home in the late 1870's. The entire interior was gutted to allow for structural stabilization of the leaning house framing and installation of up to date electrical and mechanical systems. The finishes were then restored to a new replication of what had been before. The exterior was returned to its original condition, down to paint analysis to determine the sequence of colors applied over the years to get back to the historically correct color scheme.

The project was awarded the AIA Mid Hudson Community Design Award for 2000.
